ATHLETICS

We believe physical and mental wellness are intimately connected to success and fulfillment in all aspects of life. VIA students will be trained to develop awareness of their bodies and to understand the difference between "being" and "doing". They will learn that they have power over themselves. Through a variety of modern and traditional methods, VIA students will learn to access their inner reserves of energy to continually balance, refresh, and renew themselves through their day.

Active involvement in sports develops the body, mind, and a healthy spirit. When our whole being is absorbed in physical activity, concerns and issues that occupy our thoughts give way to concentration. Whether the focus is on shooting a basketball or maintaining rhythm while running, our ability to focus is strengthened, and this strength is available to address any challenge we might face. The brain's chemistry also rewards exercise by releasing endorphins, which increases optimism and positive feelings. With a focus on their health and well being, all VIA students will enjoy participating in sports regardless of athletic ability. VIA graduates will play multiple sports throughout their lives, thereby enhancing their health and happiness. Regular participation in sports will develop sportsmanship, teamwork, and self-confidence.

VIA expects to provide basketball, volleyball, badminton, tennis, soccer, softball, football, and track. There will be regular competitions involving the entire student body, building camaraderie while learning through sports. Other sports and activities that VIA students will have the opportunity to participate in are bicycling, water skiing, kayaking, rowing, whitewater rafting, snow skiing, snowboarding, swimming, and skate boarding. Other physical activities that our students will be able to participate in on a regular basis will include yoga, weightlifting, and martial arts.

Many fun, interactive games will be utilized to build cohesion and multi-cultural understanding while at the same time serving fitness objectives. A mock Olympics, with award ceremonies, is one example to get students involved in creating the spirit of the games and competition.

Intra-mural competitive sports will be limited until VIA's second year of operations, when its student body will be large enough to field teams in sports. Student athletes who require special accommodations to maintain competitiveness in a particular sport are encouraged to apply, as arrangements can be made with other high schools and sports clubs.
