ACADEMIC VALUES

LIFE IN TRAINING

While a strong academic base is the foundation of good education, it is by no means the only element. At VIA, we also strive to ignite a curiosity in our students; to explore new paths, engage in entrepreneurial pursuits, and take risks. We offer our students opportunities to learn about real-life occupations through our Life in Training series of study modules. Drawing from the expansive resources of our staff, faculty, and family community, and professionals from various walks of life, these courses enable students to experience a "day in the life" of various occupations.

SERVICE LEARNING

VIA emphasizes service learning that has a lasting and deep impact on our students' lives. We believe meaningful service learning requires that students first study the specific context of social issues from multiple perspectives and their impact local, regional, and global communities. Then, students engage in activities designed to spark critical thinking, challenge assumptions, and promote personal reflection. By acknowledging the importance of charitable giving and then moving beyond to experiential learning, students will see the kind of impact they can have on real-world issues, and feel the positive change they can make in the lives of others, towards creating a more socially just society.

ENVIRONMENTALISM

Through a continual study of environmentalism throughout their stay at VIA, students will see themselves in the greater context of the community they live in and the world, while recognizing the benefits and consequences of their actions. Students will share and develop myriad ways they as individuals and in groups can reduce consumption, reuse, recycle, and compost. On a global scale, students will understand the open - versus closed - loop cycles of production and the immediate and long-term impact on local communities and global warming. Ultimately, students will develop a deep appreciation of their connection with our planet, and recognize that our future is tied to environmentally sound practices today.

TECHNOLOGY

Technology is now an integral part of everyday life and learning: children are immersed in it from birth. Children will be taught how to actively use technology for communication, education, and entertainment. Technology is an essential part of the modern learning experience, providing valuable motivation and a sense of mastery for children.

ENTREPRENEURISM

Entrepreneurism is at the root of the founding of VIA. Its dynamic spirit demonstrates how one person can move the world and embodies the concepts of initiative and risk, the power of one's ideas and the impact of individual action, all of which are critical to achieving success in our global society. Members of the VIA community will learn to shape and create their own destiny.
