High SCHOOL: Science

VIA's science program celebrates the wonder of human inquiry, enhances our natural curiosity and facilitates seeking and finding deeper meaning in all aspects of life, often beyond the physical and sensory world. The scientific method of inquiry and its history provides a framework for the exploration of life and nature, a guidance system that builds the students cognitive and logical skills, lifelong companions to a lifetime of learning. We make labs or field trips the principle organizing structure for the week and often the entire course. Over time, students are required to take on more active roles in designing experiments and working more independently to solve challenging problems. We focus our students on the scientific process in order to accurately expose students to scientific methods and thought processes.

Science Lab (6th through 9th grades)
Focus: Students learn hypothesis and experiment preparation and report writing as well as basic measurement skills in three subject areas:

	Chemistry:		Chemical reaction, electrolysis, density and molecule, acids, basis and solutions.
	Biology:		Demonstration of veins/arteries, vegetable garden growth graphing, fish dissection or virtual dissection, involuntary muscular reflexes, mold growth on cheese and bread.
	Physical Science:		Aerodynamics in air pressure, rocket engines and Newton's Third Law
	Earth Science:		Convection and magma, gases and magma
